The Vermilion Local School District has been awarded two safety awards by Ohio BWC Division of Safety and Hygiene.  The 100% Award is given to organizations that work an entire year without a lost time injury.

50,000 Baby Fish Released Into Vermilion River
A large crowd turned out despite the rain for the Vermilion River Fish Drop on April 25 when 50,000 fingerlings were poured into the wild Vermilion River at the South Street Ramp.

Vermilion Celebrates Earth Day
Vermilion residents celebrated Earth day with a variety of activities on Saturday. Mill Hollow offered a local steel drum band, crafts, information booths, demonstrations, hikes, and even circus performers. The Friends of the Vermilion River Watershed held an open house at the VOL Historic Community Center. The 4th Annual Vermilion in Bloom Gardeners Fair took place.

Vermilion Indoor Storage for boats and RVs has opened at the former Ford Plant on Baumhart Road.  The facility is one of the largest indoor heated storage businesses in the state.

Pitcher Earns National Honor
Oklahoma State pitcher Andrew Oliver has won another award for his performance last week against Nebraska as he has been named to the weekly “National All-Star Lineup” by the College Baseball Foundation and Diamond Sports. The sophomore southpaw from Vermilion, Ohio, allowed just three hits, all singles, and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts. He did not allow a walk in the contest.

VPD Receives Marine Patrol Grant
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft has awarded a total of $564,564 in Marine Patrol Assistance Grants to 28 local communities to assist in enforcing boating laws and maintaining safety on state waterways. The Vermilion Police Department has been awarded  $20,201.

New Patrol Boat To Dock In Vermilion
The Lorain County Sheriff's Office is getting a new a 33-foot patrol boat to be used for drug interdiction, homeland security needs, infrastructure protection, human trafficking issues and weapons interdiction as part of the Northern Border Initiative. The 33-foot boat will be docked in Vermilion.

The State of the City, State of the Schools address, took place on Thursday, March 20th at German's Villa.  Garry Mortus, Chamber Chairman, welcomed guests followed by an invocation by Pastor Cliff Morris.  Bruce Keller, Superintendent, presented the State of the Schools address. Mayor Jean Anderson presented the State of the City address.

Vermilion Receives $1 Million Check
Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur made good on her commitment to help Vermilion deal with excess noise caused by heavy rail traffic through the center of town. Kaptur announced at the State of the City address on Thursday she has secured $1 million in federal funds through the U.S. Department of Transportation to assist the city in establishing a rail “quiet zone.” The members of Concerned Citizens of Vermilion have proceeded with due diligence and an unwavering commitment in their efforts to address the noise created by increased train traffic, chaired by Coletta Kubik.

The Vermilion Family YMCA is currently working on a five-year strategic plan to to build a new facility in or near Amherst.  Two sites in Amherst and two sites outside of Amherst are being considered.

Fatal Accident On Liberty
A 40-year-old Vermilion woman suffered fatal injuries around 5:23 pm on Monday when her van was struck head-on by another driver on Liberty Avenue, according to the Vermilion Police Department.

Historic Storm Pounds Vermilion With Snow
Over 20 inches of snow buried Vermilion with the worst storm of the season, virtually shutting down the city.  Most area businesses closed, events were canceled and residents were asked to stay home. Vermilion Man Found Hanging Over Cliff
Joseph Szivan of Vermilion was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, failure to keep reasonable control of his vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and expired license plates following an incident on Friday night. He was discovered in a car that was hanging off a cliff.

Congratulations to the Vermilion Wrestling team for finishing 16th out of 53 teams at the Fostoria Wrestling District, D.J. Pohorance for qualifying in the State Bowling Tournament and the Boys Basketball team for defeating Holy Name in an overtime thriller.

Laser District 18 Championships At VBC
A premier sailing event, the Laser District 18 Championships, will take place May 24 through May 25 at the Vermilion Boat Club. John Shockey, a Vermilion youth sail camp graduate now sailing for Old Dominion University, has invited VBC to host the Laser District 18 Championships. The Laser is a one person one design boat that is the world most poplular one design class, as well it is an Olympic Class.

Library trustees and staff are busy working on the next steps in Ritter’s building expansion project.  Voters approved the project in November. FBI To Battle Gunman At VHS
FBI SWAT teams will converge on Vermilion High School on February 22 after being alerted to a hostage situation.  School faculty members will be taken hostage.  But there is no cause for alarm - it's only a drill.

Flooding Update
Vermilion topped the northern Ohio area with over 5 inches of rain on Wednesday, forcing the Vermilion River out of its banks and into neighborhoods and homes.  With the ground already saturated many yards and basements flooded.  The heavy rain has ended, however, with the ground saturated the water will only slowly recede.  Drivers should avoid flooded roads and streams.  The rain may begin to freeze.  Drivers should use caution.

On Thursday, November 31, Main Street Vermilion received Main Street Program Accreditation from the Ohio Main Street Program. The National Accreditation designation process evaluates established revitalization programs according to 10 performance standards. The Boys Varsity Bowling Team is the 2007-2008 North Shore Bowling Conference Champion. Tyler Henson, Vito Ernande, David Woods, DJ Pohorence, Bryan Buckosh, and Jake Casto all contributed to beat North Ridgeville by over 100 pins.

VHS To Host State Qualifying Tournament
Some of the best and brightest young minds in Northeast Ohio will be coming to Vermilion this weekend as Vermilion High School hosts the Cleveland District High School Speech & Debate state qualifying tournament.  Speech and Debate provides students the opportunity to develop self-confidence and public speaking skills while also learning about organization, humility and perseverance.

VHS Bowling Teams Tied For Champions
The VHS bowling teams had an incredible night, as 3 teams are now tied for conference champions. Leading the boys varsity were David Woods with a 237 game and Jake Casto with a 247. All of the varsity girls helped in their win, with Kirsten Neal bowling a 190, Valerie Piskur with a 176, Ali Cunningham solid with games of 180 and 183, and the super 213 rolled by Candis Rooker.

High Winds Reek Havoc
Thousands of area homes and businesses are still without power following wind damage that was severe and widespread. Crews are working to restore power but it's not known how long that will take.  The National Weather Service said gusts of more than 50 mph were recorded across northern Ohio overnight.  Outages also affected many schools. Many districts closed Wednesday as a result of the high wind damage.  High winds knocked down many trees and tree limbs and caused damage to homes and buildings throughout the area. No injuries have been reported.

Vermilion Is Best Of the US 2008 State Qualifier
From April through August, licensed amateur triathletes will compete in their state's designated USAT-sanctioned, sprint or international distance Qualifying Race. Male and female winners will be named Best of Their State and the right to compete at the designated Finals Championship Race.  Ohio's 2008 State Qualifier will be Vermilion Harbour Triathlon on August 17 at Linwood Park in Vermilion for Intermediate Distance.

Vermilion Local Schools Superintendent Bruce Keller has announced he will retire at the end of this year.   The Vermilion School Board has hired a search firm to find a new superintendent.  They hope to have a replacement by August 1 when contracts begin for administrators.

Bulan's Boat Yard Vermilion's 3rd Clean Marina
Bulan's Boat Yard on the Vermilion River has been officially certified an Ohio Clean Marina. Bulan's Boat Yard is the third VMBA member marina to have been certified joining Vermilion Power Boats and Romp's Water Port, Inc. The Auditior Of The State has reviewed the Independent Auditor’s Report of the City of Vermilion, Erie County, prepared by Rea & Associates, Inc., for the audit period January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2006. Two Men Indicted For Burglary
Steven Mahl, 18, and Joshua Mason, 20, have been indicted for one of the worst cases ever of vandalism in Vermilion.  The men are charged with felony counts of burglary and vandalism for a break-in to a Vermilion home.

Lake Erie Earthquake
A small earthquake rumbled below the surface of Lake Erie on Tuesday evening around 8:35 pm, according to officials with the National Earthquake Information Center.  The earthquake registered a 3.1 on the Richter Scale.

When Will The Christmas Tree Float Down The Vermilion River?
The Vermilion Port Authority will award $1000 to the lucky winner who predicts the date and time a floating Christmas Tree will be pushed down the Vermilion River by ice jams.  The Christmas tree is mounted to a float on the Vermilion River at McGarvey's Landing near Red Clay on the River.

A man had a seizure while driving on Route 2 Friday morning causing him to drive the wrong way and crash into another car, according to the State Highway Patrol.

VON Year In Review 2007
2007 began eerily similar to 2006 with lawsuits, allegations and deadly accidents.  Flooding was also a reoccurring event in 2007.  Rumors of Wal-mart coming resurfaced while many new businesses found a home in Vermilion. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money was acquired to improve the town.  Area organizations united to dramatically increase tourism.  Elections brought a record number of visitors to the website in a year when the internet appeared to have a big impact on voting decisions.  While candidate profiles, meeting minutes and events were popular reading, here’s a recap of of the most viewed articles for 2007.
