The governor, members of the media, representatives of the tourism industry, conservation leaders and wildlife officials used the outing to focus attention on the lake's excellent boating and fishing opportunities, which make it one of the Midwest's premier tourism destinations.

A new survey has found that 67% of the population have already changed their driving habits because of gas price increases. The median gas price at which they did so was $3.20 per gallon, a level that was reached in March. As the price at the pump continues to rise, more and more Americans will be changing their habits.

Children ages 5 to 14 most often drown at open-water sites (rivers, lakes). In fact, 29 percent of drownings involving children ages 5 to 14 occur in open bodies of water. Lifeguards are not enough! One in five parents believes that when lifeguards are present, the lifeguard is the main person responsible for supervising children in the water. However, the typical lifeguard-to-swimmer ratio at public swimming areas may be as high as 25 swimmers per lifeguard.

For recreational boaters, a simple fall overboard is the number one boating accident “event” that leads to the most fatalities. The US Coast Guard reports that in 2006, 275 persons died in 721 boating accidents that began with or involved a fall overboard. While some of these accidents involved other factors, being able to quickly get back in the boat - without help – isn’t easy.

Did you know that a recent court ruling about pollution being dumped from commercial ship ballast water will also require all recreational boats to get permits by September, 2008—despite the fact that 99% of recreational boats do not have ballast tanks? The official start of summer is just days away and the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) wants to have the safest summer on record. The Department is launching the "100 Days of Summer" safety program aimed at reducing fatalities and injuries on Ohio roads caused by impaired driving and failing to buckle up.

It all started with the passage of the Energy Independence and Security Act of Dec 2007. The act put in place federal requirements for fuel producers and distributors to convert to E-10 (Ethanol blend) in over 70% of all gasoline by the end of 2009. Some distributors have moved quickly to meet compliance and will be selling E-10 rated fuels in 100% of their gasoline by mid-2008. Including some Vermilion River stations.

The Wakefield property at the mouth of the Vermilion River on the Lake Erie shore may be one step closer to becoming a public park. The Erie MetroParks board voted 3-0 to help the Western Reserve Land Conservancy acquire a $1.9 million federal Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program grant to purchase the property to create a new park for Erie MetroParks.

Three men who traveled to Vermilion from New York state have been arrested. The men met three girls on MySpace and traveled to Vermilion from New York to "party" with them. Two of the girls are 14 years old. The third girl is 15 years old.

It was standing room only at the Vermilion Planning Commission meeting on Wednesday to discuss the future of the Wakefield property on the Vermilion River. The meeting was so well attended that people filled the hallway, unable to fit into the meeting room. Residents made it loud and clear they adamantly appose the development and will fight to protect the historical and nautical character of Harbour Town.
