Pempin Chosen As New Superintendent

Philip Pempin, 49, has been named the new superintendent of Vermilion local schools.  Pempin's career spans 21 years in Cleveland as a teacher and administrator.  He is currently the assistant superintendent for Cleveland Schools.

Pempin will replace Bruce Keller who announced his retirement in January.

School and city officials, administrators, teachers and parents interviewed finalists during a four-hour board meeting on Sunday.

Pempin received a three-year contract which will begin on August 1 at a rate of $114,126 annually.

Keller, 57, began his career with the Vermilion schools in 1992 as assistant superintendent.  He became the superintendent in 2000 when the district was in a fiscal emergency.  He earns $105,000 a year.

Keller said dealing with finances and improving the curriculum were his biggest challenges.  Under his leadership the district earned an effective rating, having improved its status with the state from continuous improvement.
