Prom Is Saturday
Vermilion's legendary prom tradition continues this Saturday, May 10, at Vermilion High School. Each year the school is transformed into another far-off place or fantasy land. Hundreds turn out to watch students arrive is grand style in Hummer stretch limos, antique cars, tractors, hot air balloons, carriages and more.
This year's theme is "Razz Club Gala." It's an eclectic mix of the 1920's, Old Boardwalk and Vaudeville and the silent movies. The event will feature jazz music. The hallway will look like an old movie theater with a "hotel lobby area" of wicker furniture. The opposite hall will have a boardwalk theme with treats, cotton candy, popcorn and smoothies. There will be a mock stage with "secret entertainment."
Tables will feature black table clothes with white linens, boas, pearl necklaces and coins. Name cards will feature feathers or bolder hats.
The dessert room will be decorated as a silent movie house. Students can take photos with cutouts of a man or woman in swimming suits.
Advisor Jill Rhoad has taken over prom planning following the retirement of Rich Robbin in 2007.
The school opens at 4:30 pm for public viewing. Doors close at 6:30 pm. Students begin to arrive at 7 pm.
Visitors are asked to remain behind the ropes and to park at the stadium. Dinner will be served when everyone from a reserved table has arrived.
