The Inland Seas Maritime Museum is operated by the Great Lakes Historical Society. It is located at the north end of Main St. by Lake Erie.
The Great lakes Historic Society was founded in 1944 to record, preserve, and interpret the maritime history of the Great Lakes, the largest body of fresh water in the world. It is the oldest and largest organization exclusively devoted to the story of the “Inland Seas” of North America.
The Inland Seas Maritime Museum of the Great Lakes Historical Society, established in 1953, is housed in the former Wakefield Mansion, known as Harbor View. The mansion was built in 1909. There is also a modern addition.
The museum is a great place to experience the Great Lakes:
- Activate a lighthouse lens
- View replicas of the many ships of the Great Lakes
- And much, much more. All at the Inland Seas Maritime Museum
A replica of the 1877 Vermilion Lighthouse, along with a ship's propeller and anchor, is on the Museum's lawn.
